The Program works directly with the skilled trades industry. They develop standards and exams for Red Seal trades. A person who passes the Red Seal exam receives a Red Seal endorsement. The Red Seal is proof that a tradesperson has met the national standard in their trade.
There are 54 trades currently recognized in the Red Seal program. They include auto mechanics, carpenter, cook, electrician, heavy equipment operator, ironworker, machinist, millwright, pipefitter, plumber, roofer, tool and dye maker and welder.
To obtain a Red Seal certification, you need to follow these steps:
1. Perfect your skills in your trade.
2. Pass exams at each level of training to receive your provincial qualification as a journeyman.
3. Meet the Red Seal examination requirements of your province or territory.
4. Take the Red Seal exam, which is a four-hour multiple-choice test assessing your knowledge and ability to perform trade tasks. You must receive a mark of 70% or higher to pass.
